Saint-Gilles / Nîmes / Camargue
Between heritage and Camargue charm, between antique remains and traditions...
Less than 30 minutes from the Mediterranean and the Alpilles, between the Cévennes and Provence, Saint-Gilles is a strategic crossroads in the south of France, linking ‘Nîmes, la languedocienne’ and ‘Arles, la provençale’.
Situated between the Costières to the north and the Camargue Gardoise to the south, the city of Saint-Gilles is full of wonders to discover! With its rich historical, cultural and natural heritage, the town offers plenty of opportunities for authentic visits, walks and discoveries along its picturesque streets. Start with its abbey church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a jewel of Romanesque art and a testament to the city's prestigious past.
But pilgrimages were not the only reason for the town's prosperity. The four harbours that extended trade links with Europe and support from the Counts of Toulouse were also important factors in the town's influence.
Saint-Gilles is also known for having been involved in the Cathar affair in 1208 and 1209, with the assassination of the papal legate, Pierre de Castelnau, and the ‘penance’ of Count Raymond VI of Toulouse, which triggered the crusade against the Albigensians.
Just a few minutes from Saint-Gilles, Camargue is a unique area in France in terms of exceptional biodiversity and local traditions : a wilderness paradise between land and sea. Classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, with its vast expanses of marshes, lagoons and wild beaches, it is a delight for nature lovers, who can observe its emblematic fauna: pink flamingos, white Camargue horses and black bulls. A diversion to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a major pilgrimage site, Aigues-Mortes, with its medieval ramparts and, of course, Arles, with its Roman and Romanesque monuments listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including its famous arena, is a must.
To the north, less than 30 minutes away, Nîmes unveils its emblematic monuments: the arena, the Maison Carrée and the Jardins de la Fontaine, ancient architecture treasures
